Female Incontinence - Involuntary Urine Leakage of Women during pregnancy

Incontinence is an involuntary urine leakage or loss in an individual. It is also known as urine incontinence and is much more prominent among women. Female incontinence is generally prompted due to some sort of a physical activity that puts pressure on her bladder. Women most often experience female incontinence during pregnancy and childbirth. But there are several other factors that can lead to female incontinence such as menopause, diabetes, urinary tract infection, obesity, chronic bouts of sneezing or coughing, weak muscles in the urinary bladder, birth defects, multiple sclerosis, and these factors being the most common.

Women can now opt for treatment for incontinence at several clinics and hospitals. By undergoing a treatment for incontinence, this cumbersome and embarrassing problem can be taken care of.

Different types of female incontinence are –

  • Urge incontinence
  • Functional incontinence
  • Stress incontinence
  • Overflow incontinence
  • Overactive incontinence
  • Transient incontinence

Stress female incontinence is very common among pregnant and menopausal women. Even the simplest of physical activities like laughing and sneezing can lead to urinary incontinence due to excess pressure applied on the urethra muscles. Even women undergoing menstruation can experience urinary incontinence.

Female incontinence arises due to problematic nerves and muscles which function to contain or release the urine within the urinary bladder. The bladder is a sac or a balloon like organ that stores urine and is connected to the muscles of the urethra. Incontinence occurs if the bladder muscles suddenly contract or are too weak to hold up the urine.

There is no definite treatment for incontinence. It varies with every type as well as the person suffering from it. Often, for female incontinence, a gynecologist or an obstetrician can help evaluate the problem as they specialize in the reproductive tract. Or you could turn to an urologist for treatment for incontinence. The doctor will first diagnose which type of urinary incontinence you are suffering from. After diagnosing the problem, the doctor will then suggest for you a treatment such as a behavioral treatment known as voiding or Kegel exercises which help build up the strength of your muscles.

There are several medicines and drugs that are available for the treatment for incontinence. There are exclusive treatments for treating female incontinence. Stress incontinence is often treated by simply injecting collagen or carbon spheres that are used to thicken the urethra muscles or also could be treated by surgical methods.
